David Hodge was a gentle, supportive and inspiring teacher, who taught me how to see the world around me and to draw what I saw ... to experiment with fresh, exciting techniques and media ... to trust my own creative instincts ... and to think metaphorically. I think the latter informed my career as a copywriter, in which I was often required to conjure analogies and symbols. My artistic soul languished for many years but was re-ignited a couple of decades ago when I discovered oil paint, a medium I find heavenly for its rich color, sensuousness, and forgiving nature. Working with oil has afforded me the same sense of freedom and joyful discovery that I once experienced in Mr. Hodge's light- and love-filled art room.
